Homes with Spirit: Hallowed Walls to Gothic Halls

As the nights grow longer and the crisp autumn air settles in, many of us feel a heightened awareness of the unseen, loved ones lost, and the stories that linger in between old walls. This time of the year blends a little enigma with deeper spiritual reflection: honoring and observing those who have passed before us during Día de los Muertos and All Saints Day.

Century of Tales

The Bristol McBride Mansion, built in 1874, has hosted stories for nearly 150 years. Once a stately Romanesque all-brick estate, it became a house for the souls of the nearby Independence Army Airfield during WWII. Quite a bargain priced under $100,000, it is in need of a lot of work.  Restoration began but stalled... leaving it in a fascinating state of “pause”—a chance to bring history back to life.

Chapel on the Hill

A former Chapel, perched atop a two-acre hill exhibits sweeping views of the Mississippi River. Massive retaining walls hide underground passages that once stretched beneath a razed school which towered disproportionately over this Catholic Church.  Perfect for those who love a little history, explore the grandeur of vaulted ceilings and imagine over a century of quiet reflection… or something more.

Abandoned Sanctuary

A small church on the same street as the Chapel, sits quietly in “as-is” condition making it appear spookily abandoned. The side yard and multiple rooms spark the imagination—what could this space become? Renovators or a church congregation looking for a new home may see potential; ghost enthusiasts may see… something else entirely.

Peculiar Possibilities

Not only is the town named Peculiar, but this house lives up to it. Whoever took the pictures obviously was in a hurry to get out of there. What is the strange white glow on the floor in the room with the fireplace? With expansive acreage and lots of square footage—this home invites imagination and creativity for those looking to embrace its quirks.

Golden Era of Ghost Stories

Near the boyhood home of Mark Twain you can get this 7 bedroom Victorian home with over 5,000 sq ft in Hannibal, MO. It features men’s and women’s parlors, crown molding, period bookcases, millwork and fireplaces to relax and enjoy all the former Queen Anne Bed & Breakfast vintage decor. The renaissance of literary ghost stories lives in every room—a perfect backdrop for evenings filled with tales and tea.

Full of Spirits... or Beer

A Romanesque Revival architectural marvel literally falling apart at the seams. Built by local brewing pioneer Ferdinand Herold, he commissioned a Cherokee Native American headstone above the front archway of this mansion turned boarding house. Underground electrical service and a lagering cellar awaits an ambitious home brew aficionado. Sometimes, history—or perhaps "spirits"—refuse to leave.
